Make Big
Polluters Pay

While ordinary people shoulder the escalating costs of climate disasters, big polluters keep making record profits. It’s time they paid their fair share.

Climate impacted communities across Australia know the true cost of
climate change.

We’ve lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. Our mental and physical health has been compromised.

We call on the Australian Government to introduce a Climate Pollution Levy on coal, oil and gas corporations and establish a Climate Compensation Fund.

It is families just like mine who are shouldering the burden of climate change and we are close
to breaking.

We continue to be hit by unseasonal and extreme weather events - fires, floods, drought, storms and heatwaves. And we know these events are made worse by the burning of fossil fuels polluting and heating our planet.

Yet while ordinary people pay the price, the corporations most responsible for the climate crisis walk away with record profits.

Right now:

  • Climate disasters already cost Australia an estimated $38 billion every year - that’s about $3,800 per household.

  • The Black Summer bushfires alone cost over $100 billion, taking lives, destroying homes, farms, and jobs, and leaving deep scars in our communities.

  • Meanwhile, fossil fuel corporations pay next to nothing for our resources, put their hand out for $14.5 billion in subsidieseach year, while exploiting tax loopholes to pay little to no tax.

Coal, oil and gas companies externalise the true cost of their products - shifting the burden of climate damage onto communities, farmers, and families. It’s time to turn that around.

That’s why we created the Australian Bushfire Survivor Declaration and its fifth key ask: Raise the money required to pay the escalating climate damage bill by making the big fossil fuel polluters pay.

We call on the Australian Government to Make Big Polluters Pay and:

  1. Introduce a Climate Pollution Levy on coal, oil and gas corporations, making them pay for the harm their products cause.

  2. Use that levy to establish a Climate Compensation Fund - so communities on the frontline of fires, floods, drought, and other climate disasters have the resources they need to recover and adapt, and to support all Australian communities and governments in the clean energy transition.

  3. End fossil fuel subsidies and close tax loopholes, ensuring the industry pays its fair share.

A Climate Pollution Levy could raise up to $46 billion a year - funds that could be invested in community-led recovery, climate adaptation measures for communities and those hardest hit by climate change, plus a fair deal for workers and communities transitioning away from coal and gas production.

This is what a fair go looks like: giving Australians the opportunity to prepare for the climate impacts already locked in, and making sure ordinary people don’t carry the cost of the damage that big polluting corporations cause.

For too long, big polluters have profited while everyday people carry the cost. It’s time to make the big polluters pay.
