Australia’s climate pollution law isn’t doing its job, but you can do something about it.

Our industrial climate pollution law – the “Safeguard Mechanism” – is meant to decrease climate pollution from Australia's largest industrial facilities by nearly 5% year on year. But it’s not working, because it has some big loopholes that polluters are exploiting. In fact, facilities that fall under the law have only decreased their actual pollution by less than half a percent over the last few years - and that’s nowhere near enough.

We have until Friday 18 September to make a submission!

To make your voice heard, first write a short letter to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water making these two points:

1. To truly reduce climate pollution, the use of carbon credits and offsets must be capped for facilities covered by the Safeguard Mechanism.

2. To protect Australian manufacturing and other critical industries, those carbon credits and offsets that are used must be reserved for sectors other than the production and burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). 

It doesn’t have to be perfect, just respectful and to the point. Then, head to the Department’s consultation webpage here and scroll down to the “Make a submission” button near the bottom of the page. It will just take a few minutes to work your way through the webform, but don’t worry, it’s not as hard as it looks - just follow the prompts.

Then upload your letter and hit submit!
